Animal General Encourages Pet Owners to Brush Up on Oral Health

Periodontal disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets. By the age of three, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of dental disease. Symptoms in both dogs and cats include: yellow and brown build-up of tartar along the gum line, inflamed gums, pain, and persistent bad breath. Untreated periodontal disease can lead to systemic health problems which can cause serious damage to other areas of your pets body.

Pet owners who take an active role in their pets dental health can help prevent periodontal disease and help ensure a healthy life for their canine and feline companions. Even with preventive oral care at home, it sometimes is necessary for your pet to receive a dental procedure. This will remove any tartar build-up and will allow us to address any diseased teeth. An exam is the best way to determine your pets need for a dental procedure. During exams, our doctors perform a thorough physical on your pet and are happy to discuss the benefits of dental care.

Pet owners are naturally concerned when anesthesia is required for their pet, and some facilities are now offering Anesthesia-Free Dental procedures. Dental Scaling without anesthesia sounds like a safer way to have your pets teeth cleaned right? WRONG! According to the American Veterinary Dental College, most of these procedures are considered Non-Professional Dental Scalings (NPDS) because they are often done by individuals who are not veterinarians or supervised and trained technicians. AVDC feels that NPDS is inappropriate because the cleaning may not be thorough and can even be dangerous for your pet. For more information, please go to the AVMC website or consult with one of our veterinarians.
