Our 30 minute appointment time slots allow us ample time to obtain a full history, perform a thorough physical exam, and provide a treatment plan for your pet. We take the time to answer all of your questions and are happy to provide estimates for all procedures.
House Calls
Sometimes a simple trip to the veterinarian can be a stressful time to your pet. Our house call service allows our veterinarians to treat your pet in the comforts of their own home to reduce some of that stress. House call appointments are available upon request.
Ultrasound
Ultrasonography allows us to more thoroughly evaluate your pets internal organs in a non-invasive manner. Dr. Suzanne May, our board certified internal medicine specialist, is trained in abdominal ultrasonography and can perform on-site ultrasounds.
Senior Care
As our pets age, they encounter more medical conditions which can decrease their quality of life. These include dental disease, arthritis, cataracts, skin conditions, organ failure, tumors, gastrointestinal disease and neurological disorders. At Animal General, we can provide you with information on all of these conditions, how they will affect your pet and how to help treat and prevent them. We offer complete health programs for adult and geriatric pets to form baseline values, to monitor changes in your pets health, to help in early detection of disease and provide optimal care for your older pet. Based on your pets condition and complete physical exam we may recommend a CBC (complete blood count), chemistry panel, urinalysis, thyroid testing, ECG, chest and abdominal x-rays and blood pressure measurement.
Surgery
All of our surgeries have intravenous catheters, are put on intravenous fluids and warm air heating systems, and monitored with EKG recordings, blood pressure, and pulse oximetry. Our surgical patients are provided with pre-operative sedation and pre and post-operative pain medication. All surgeries are monitored by a technician. At Animal General we perform routine procedures such as spays, neuters, and mass removals, as well as cystotomies, splenectomies, intestinal biopsy and foreign body removals.
Dentistry
At Animal General we feel good oral care directly affects the quality and longevity of your pets life. Our equipment includes a digital camera for pre and post dental pictures, a high speed air-driven drill and dental X-rays which allow us to accurately diagnose and treat your pets dental disease.
Animal General offers digital X-ray technology, the latest advance in veterinary dental imaging. This equipment allows the medical team to obtain dental images that are more detailed than traditional x-rays, allowing for enhanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities as well as reduced anesthesia time compared to traditional X-rays.
Animal General's digital X-ray machine produces "on the spot" images so the veterinarian can see problems below the gum line and inside of teeth without having to wait for traditional X-ray films to be developed. Digital X-ray technology also gives the veterinarian the ability to produce before and after images of your pets dental procedures in a convenient, cost-effective manner. These images are invaluable to educating owners about the importance of oral health to their pets longevity.
Laboratory
Our laboratory allows us to perform immediate CBC's, Chemistry, and Electrolyte panels to quickly diagnose and treat your pet. We also perform pre-anesthetic blood testing on all our surgical patients. These tests allow us to detect diseases such as diabetes, kidney and liver disease, check red and white blood cells for anemia or infection which minimizes the risk of anesthetic complications. We also do microscopic examinations of ear smears, fecal exams for intestinal parasites, skin scrapes and urine specimens.
Pharmacy
We carry a full line of medication to treat your pet including all of the current flea, tick and heartworm medications as well as prescription pet foods from Hill's, Eukanuba, and Royal Canin.
Online Pharmacy
Internet sites that sell pet medicines can be reputable pharmacies. However, other Internet sites are fronts for businesses breaking Federal, State, and sometimes, International laws. Illegal online pharmacies may sell medicines that are counterfeit, outdated, mislabeled, incorrectly formulated, or improperly made or stored. Be aware and learn about purchasing pet medications from online pharmacies by visiting Center for Veterinary Medicine.
With our Online Pharmacy, you can rest easy knowing that you are getting your pets products delivered straight to your door through your trusted veterinarian. Our medicines are supplied directly from the manufacturer and are 100% guaranteed!
Radiographs
Our state of the art digital x-ray machine allows us to take better quality radiographs to more accurately diagnose your pet. Digital x-ray also decreases the amount of radiation your pet is exposed to and minimizes the time it takes to diagnose your pet. With digital x-rays we can also send the radiographs to a board certified radiologist for consultation through e-mail.
Video Otoscopy
One of the more common problems seen in pets are ear infections. With our video otoscope we can now better treat these painful conditions. Our video otoscope allows us to look deep into the ear canal, evaluate the ear drum, and perform a thorough cleaning.
Internal medicine consultations are done by Dr. Suzanne May who completed her internal medicine residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. She is currently the only board certified internal medicine specialist in a general practice in both Bergen and Hudson Counties. She is available for consultations and second opinions on all internal medicine cases and can perform on-site ultrasounds. Dr. May is also available to see your pet for general exams.
Microchipping
We carry both AKC Companion Animal Recovery and HomeAgain microchips. The microchips, which are about the size of a grain of rice, can be implanted under your pets' skin as a permanent means of identification. If your pet is lost, and brought to a veterinary hospital or shelter, they will be scanned to check for the presence of a microchip. If a chip is present, the identification code is called in to a recovery system, and you will be notified that your pet has been found! Additionally, some countries require your pet to have an international microchip in order to visit.
Health Certificates
Any of our doctors can provide you with a Domestic Health Certificate to allow your pet to travel within the United States.
Dr. Freedman and Dr. Zelinski are certified by the United States Department of Agriculture to issue International Health Certificates which is required for travel abroad.
If you are traveling overseas, please contact the embassy of the country you are planning on traveling prior to making an appointment. Different countries may have specific travel requirements, that can change at any time, which your pet must meet in order to obtain an international health certificate.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture can be useful to complement traditional veterinary medicine in the treatment of many conditions such as orthopedic, neurologic and pain management. Dr. Karen Zelinski is certified in Veterinary Acupuncture and is available by appointment at River Pet Resort and Rehab.
Wisdom Panel Professional Mixed-Breed Analysis
Over 25 million mixed-breed dog owners know their dogs...but not as well as they could. With a simple blood test, Wisdom Panel can determine the ancestry of a mixed-breed dog, with 90% accuracy, by testing for more than 200 breeds.
Wisdom Panel not only detects the breeds in your dog's ancestry, it will also model an ancestry chart showing where each breed was likely involved so you can see when the breeds contributed to your dog's family history! A dog's ancestry can influence them in surprising ways. Obvious and not-so-obvious physical traits plus behaviors all come from the various breeds in a dog's family tree. Once an owner understands a dog's natural tendencies, it makes it possible to create a tailored training, exercise, nutrition and medical program to fit their one-of-a-kind needs
