Steps to Take In A Pet Emergency

If you and your pet are having a veterinary emergency, follow the steps below.

• Call Ahead If Possible - Call our emergency veterinarians right immediately during our regular business hours. If we are closed, please call one of the animal emergency clinics listed above to inform them that you are coming.
• Follow Instructions Provided - When talking to the emergency vet let them know you are on your way, they might give you instructions to help you apply first aid or tell you how you can make your pet as comfortable. Follow those instructions carefully.
• Remain Calm - Keep calm and be extra careful around your pet. When an animal are experiencing pain they often react negatively towards anyone who is trying to help them and may bite or scratch.
• Bring Your Pet In For Care - Don't put yourself at risk! Bring your pet safely to our Edgewater veterinary clinic or one of the after-hours emergency pet hospitals above.

• Do I need to call ahead?

  Animal General offers urgent and emergency  veterinary care for cats and dogs during our regular operating hours. It's always best to call us ahead of time if you can, however, we understand that in emergency situations that's not always possible. 

  If we aren't able to fit your pet into our schedule, we suggest visiting one of the after-hours emergency vet locations displayed above. 

• When is your clinic open?

  Our veterinarians see emergency cases during our regular business hours:

• What situations require emergency veterinary care?

  The situations below are examples of emergencies that need immediate care:

  • Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn't stop
  • Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
  • Choking, difficulty breathing, or continuous coughing/gagging
  • Fractured bones or severe lameness
  • Seizures and/or staggering
  • Bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in the urine
  • Inability to urinate or pass feces, or pain associated with urinating or passing feces
  • Severe vomiting or diarrhea; 2+ episodes in 24-hours
  • Injuries to the eye(s)
  • Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)
  • Heat stress or heatstroke
  • Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
  • Unconsciousness
• How long will we have to wait to see the vet?

  Our Animal General in Edgewater is similar to a human doctor's office—it can be unpredictable, and you may have to wait. 

  We can't predict what cases we will see and when they will arrive. If you can, call ahead to find out if we are able to provide emergency care for your pet.

• What happens if my pet needs overnight care?

  Some veterinary emergencies need overnight intensive care. In this case, we will refer your pet to one of our trusted 24/7 emergency animal hospitals (listed above on this page). We will consult with you regarding the referral and transfer in advance.

  Our emergency vets are mostly experienced with cats and dogs.
